Information regarding Domain Names
Your domain name should reflect your company name and or business, being as short as possible while still making sense.
MilduraInternetWebsiteDesignAndHosting.com.au probably better reflects what we do, but it's a bit of a pain to type in all the time. MI.com.au is nice and short, but it doesn't tell you much and you're unlikely to guess it.

Your domain name also becomes the main half of your email address. So its something your going to have to give to a lot of people. Possibly over the phone. Consider how it sounds, how obvious is it? Is it something you're going to have to spell out every time you give it to someone?
Should you register .com or .com.au ?
Australian based companies should definitely use the .au domain. Customers are educated enough to look for it.
Search engines like Google and Sensis will use it to identify you as an Australian company. This will place you higher in search results from people they identify as searching from Australia (something they are very good at).
You can always register a .com domain as well as the .au one, and then redirect from one to the other.
A .au domain should cost no more than $60 for two years. No set-up fees or maintenance charges are necessary. Time to register one is about 24-48 hours at most. No need to pay for "faster" registration.

To own a .com.au or .net.au domain you must be an Australian registered company, OR a registered business name / number (ABN, VicRBN etc)
The domain name you order should be either an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the supplied business registration, OR it should be a close and substantial connection to the domain name.
